The ManKind Project – Break through your fears! Make life count.
Hear the call. Take the risk. Face the ordeal. Get the reward.

Vibrant Emeritus

by Michael Meade

A man can get caught between an outer life whose meaning is draining away and an inner life dominated by lions enraged from lack of nourishment. After a while, stuckness becomes numbing.—one of the most fearful states men experience. Turning numb happens in all kinds of ways and has become so common that it’s considered part of aging. Certainly, it is one of our fears about aging. Whatever the primary emotional style of a man may be, numbing can occur. His anger may turn cold and form a hard shell that blocks his inner and outer life. Even a warm heart may become stone cold and kill intimacy of any kind. Fear may become petrified, keeping people at a distance and blocking change within. Shame may build to a point where any close attention will shut everything down; it can stop a man from doing something before he even gets started. Sorrow may begin to feel like a weight that can’t be moved, and a wasteland can grow out of the numbness.

In the present culture, because of the dearth of role model, honored and respected Elders in our lives and the dearth of men who see Elderhood as anything but a depressing vision of life of debilitation in a nursing home, we often get stuck at the crossroads where a decision is called for. I have met many men who appear confused about what to do with their lives as they age and their careers are ending. Life as a Vibrant Emeritus can be as active, challenging, growthful and exciting as life as Warrior. It is life on a different frequency and it is emitting energy out to others from one’s deepest core. I have met men whose confusion comes from their attempt to continue to do what they have always done to stoke and stroke their inner dynamism and it is no longer working. I talked with others who have lost their purpose.
Life as a Vibrant Emeritus offers the discovery of new challenges that can be met in ways that demand creativity, movement into what is unknown, “going we know not where to fetch we know not what.” Men taking this route today are pioneers and early adapters, forging the path others will want to follow. We will become the role models, supporters and inspires for the next generations, mentoring them through their Warrior Journey, and lowering the obstacles to their entering the last half or third of their lives with passion, enthusiasm and joy.

Historic Alliance formed between Oglala Lakota Men and Women’s Oyate and the ManKind Project USA

mkp-one-manThe Indigenous Men’s and Women’s Oyate (Community) of the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota Reservation in South Dakota has formed an alliance with the ManKind Project USA nonprofit men’s training and peer support organization, the first of its kind in more than 150 years.

For more than 20 years men and women connected with the ManKind Project have been building relationships with the people on the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota Reservation in South Dakota, creating trust and mutual respect. Beginning in the 1990s, a number of indigenous men traveled to attend the ManKind Project’s New Warrior Training Adventure in Colorado and Iowa, taking the emotional and purpose-focused work back to the reservation to form men’s and women’s circles.

Signing of the Alliance – Dallas and Becky Chief Eagle
On March 14, 2015, Elders of the Pine Ridge Men’s and Women’s Oyate (community) and representatives of the ManKind Project USA met in ceremony to formalize a “Hunka,” a “Making of Allies” between the ManKind Project USA and the Pine Ridge Oyate.

Dallas Chief Eagle and his wife Becky Chief Eagle, who hold leadership roles in the Pine Ridge Oyate, said that this is the first such agreement in over 150 years, since an alliance between the Lakota and the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes in 1868.

The men and women of the Pine Ridge Oyate have benefited from the healing and connection that men have found through ManKind Project trainings and in peer-facilitated groups. In a 2013 article on “Indianz.com;” “The Men’s Oyate – Going from pain to healing” Dallas Chief Eagle described the evolution of the Oyate and the type of work being done in the men’s groups.

According to Chief Eagle, generations of [native] men have grown up without any emotional support. “Now we are able to get together and attend to these emotions. I am now more real than I used to be. I am more honest. I’m not as angry as I used to be, not as frustrated.”

In an interview with Boysen Hodgson, the ManKind Project USA’s Communications Director, Dallas described the events leading up to the alliance through a number of notable elders in the Lakota tribe, several of whom have now passed away.

The women of Pine Ridge support the work because of the direct impact it has on their families and community. From Indianz.com: One of the goals of the Men’s Oyate is to become the men their women need them to be.

Becky Chief Eagle has been married to Dallas for 5 years. She said, “I have seen mahasani do a 360 degree turn. I fell in love with Dallas because we could communicate, but in the last 18 months he has really opened up and shared a lot. It strengthened us. He helped my son and I help his daughters, and now he is not afraid to tell you he loves you.”

Speaking about the alliance, Dan Pecaut, a native of Iowa who has been assisting with efforts to bring Lakota men to the Central Plains community for ManKind Project trainings and supporting the development of peer-facilitated groups said, “To grow into a relationship of trust with these beautiful people upon whom were visited genocide, broken promises, and cultural destruction over the past century and a half is deeply humbling. I’m simply awed by their generosity of spirit.”

MKP USA has committed to support the people of Pine Ridge “for the generations,” and has gifted the full content of the New Warrior Training Adventure to the people of Pine Ridge to use in a way that best helps heal and build community. Formalizing the alliance was viewed by those participating as a step “toward healing built with accountability, trust, and responsibility for our peoples.”

Said Rich Tosi, co-founder of the ManKind Project, “This is not an occasion for MKP to take pride saying ‘look at what we’ve done’. It is a serious commitment we’re making to a people who have been betrayed. We are establishing a relationship based on mutual trust. It’s a large responsibility. What we offer now in this alliance is what we have to give, in the hope that community and healing will continue to grow in Pine Ridge. I think what is called for, and what I feel, is humility. It is my deepest prayer that Pine Ridge and MKP will benefit greatly from this relationship as we learn from each other.”

The ceremony took place over two days, March 13 and 14, and included a traditional lodge, a pipe ceremony, a traditional buffalo hunt, and a formal signing of the alliance with about 50 men and women from Pine Ridge and the ManKind Project in attendance. At the request of the Elders of the Oyate, Oscar nominated filmmaker Frederick Marx, who has a long history of relationships on the Pine Ridge Reservation, was brought in to document the historic events.

Coming out of this Alliance, the Pine Ridge Oyate is already actively integrating the new material. On May 1-3, at the Chief Eagles’ All Nations Training Center in Martin, South Dakota, a New Warrior Training Adventure was held for men, women, and children of the Pine Ridge Oyate to continue the work of emotional healing and community building that is the basis for the new relationship.

Men’s and Women’s Training, May 1-3

Becky Chief Eagle, in an interview with the ManKind Project USA, talked about the evolution of the work that she and Dallas have been doing. “We now have a big, big family of healthy people coming together, where we can share dreams, ceremony, and wishes,” she is excited for the possibility of bringing the work to more areas of the Pine Ridge Reservation through her extensive connections to service organizations in the area.

“This is all from the love, compassion, and commitment the people have within them,” said Becky, “our doors are always open.”

This alliance does not represent a formal alliance with the Lakota Nation, but with a community based organization of men and women at Pine Ridge.

The path of the spiritual warrior

warrior-out-with-the-old

The path of the spiritual warrior is not soft and sweet. It is not artificially blissful and pretend forgiving. It is not fearful of divisiveness. It is not afraid of its own shadow. It is not afraid of losing popularity when it speaks its truth. It will not beat around the bush where directness is essential. It has no regard for vested interests that cause suffering. It is benevolent and it is firey and it is cuttingly honest in its efforts to liberate itself and humanity from the egoic ties that bind. Shunning strong opinions in the name of spirituality is anti-spiritual. Spirituality that is only floaty soft is a recipe for disaster, allowing all manner of manipulation to run amok. Real spirituality is a quest for truth, in all its forms. Sometimes we find the truth on the meditation cushion, and sometimes we find it in the heart of conflict. May all spiritual warriors rise into fullness. This planet is lost without them.

Almost home from the battle field

Spiritual-Warrior-300
I’m seeing the light over there.. toward the end of the present battle! Over my shoulder has been my guides, my ancestors and those that I acknowledge as elders and mentors. I stepped into this challenge more than a year ago now and the frequencies and the power of spiritual downloading have all been and continue to be so intense!

It has and continues to be an intense battle, which one of my guides warned me of it’s coming and this warning gave me ample opportunity to start by unloading some of the negative baggage that I had weighing me down! I chose to step into this with all of my powers of intuition, perception and humility, the rewards have been great!

The present intensity of this battle within the coming full moon of Scorpio has me near physical exhaustion which in turn challenges my mental quickness to respond to the negativity that is hitting my shield, but as I continue to push forward along the path, I continue the dumping of the negativity of the shadows so long held within!

As the negative aspects are being shed, the clearing of space to continue to download the love and the light gifted by Creator is so intense. I chose this battle, this journey of awakening and this climb up the mountain of insight and awareness. The moon aspect of Scorpio has always been one my biggest challenges as in the eleventh sign coming into my home of Sagittarius and then the re-grounding of Capricorn, ‘the light over there’.

I am so close to the peak of this mountain and it is with so much gratitude and humility that I recognize the companionship of my guides, my elders, the ancestors and All my relations! The shield I carry has provided so much needed protection from the negativity of this battle and the world around me! The sword I carry continues to be filled with the love and the light of Creator!

I AM Blessed, filled with gratitude, humility and have been given so much further power of insight and perception, the spirit of the owl has evolved within! I see.. within and without judgment or expectations..

Expecting Mission Upgrades by Tuesday.. Aho WiseOwL @v@
